You know that feeling when you walk into a boutique hotel? The one where it feels so cozy and welcoming, as if someone designed it just for you. At the same time, you feel curious and excited to explore every thoughtful detail.
I want to share insights with you on how and why to transform your everyday living spaces into luxurious, hotel-like environments.
My career began in Hospitality where I learned the importance of service and guest experience. The values of attention to detail, personalized service, consistency, reliability, and building lasting relationships carry over into my approach to interior design. My shift from hospitality management to interior design happened seamlessly in 2010.
So how do you take that boutique-hotel feel and bring it to your home?
Let’s start with creating a welcoming atmosphere.
Color + Texture.
The easiest way to create a high visual impact is through color and texture. Whether you choose to paint the walls, or use pops of color in art, textiles, and accessories, pick a color that evokes an emotion for you. Do you want your space to feel like a sanctuary that induces relaxation and reduces anxiety, or do you prefer a space that brings mental clarity and focus? The right color palette will set the tone as soon as you enter the space. Choose soft, muted shades of blue and green for serenity, combined with neutrals for grounding. Colors found in natural landscapes are inherently calming.
Lighting.
I cannot emphasize layered lighting enough. What is layered lighting? Ambient, task, and accent lights all working in harmony. Overhead lighting should only be used when you need 100% brightness to see every detail of a space – maybe in an art studio. However, if you want your home to feel curated just for you, you need layers.
Have you ever been to a restaurant at dusk, only to find the manager has forgotten to dim the lights as the sun sets? The entire dining experience feels off; the lights are bright, and the atmosphere suffers. But once the lights dim to just the right setting, everything shifts and feels right.
By layering your lighting with task lights, ambient lights, and accent lighting, you can create the perfect experience. Use a combination of wall sconces, table lamps, and floor lamps, and install dimmers on those overhead lights. And why not choose unique light fixtures? After all, lighting is the jewelry of the room.
Invest in a few high-end furnishings and materials.
Quality.
I’m not saying you need to upholster every chair or sofa in boucle or chenille or have every area rug be 100% New Zealand wool. However, splurge on a few items that bring you joy and that you will enjoy for years to come – like the perfect throw. There’s nothing like starting your day with a fresh cup of coffee, snuggled up on your sofa, legs curled, wrapped in an alpaca throw blanket. If you can choose between leather or fabric for your sofa, you won’t regret spending a little extra for that perfect, soft-buttery leather that ages like a bomber jacket providing timeless, effortless, luxurious comfort.
Never sacrifice comfort on your sofa. We are all guilty of it; I know this. Spend researching the right sofa – the one that is bench-made in America, the one you can choose the fabric or leather for. The one you can finally relax on and let out a sigh of relief. The one that feels like it gives you a hug at the end of the day. The one that will last you years.
Make it intentional.
Say goodbye to tchotchkes.
Now that you have a beautifully curated space with the perfect color palette, lighting to highlight those colors in their best hue, and a few high-end pieces, resist the temptation to clutter the room with tchotchkes just to complete the look. Do not fill the room with every tchotchke. The final layer of the room should consist of storytelling pieces, like memorable objets or family photos. Collect items from your travels, unique artwork or antiques that narrate a story. Choose things that evoke emotions. Your space should reflect who you are and inspire you. Buy that quirky, brightly painted wooden pig that you saw during your travels because it made you smile and feels like home. Take home that slightly unconventional side table from the antique store because it reminds you of your childhood visits to your Babcia’s (grandmother’s) house. No matter how you choose to finish or refresh your space, remove anything that does not bring you joy. Your home should offer peace and a sense of serenity.
Personalization.
When you stay at a boutique hotel or a well-curated Airbnb, you notice the thought and personalization put into each room. You can create little moments of personalization in your entryway, bathroom, and other unique spaces throughout your home. For example, place a welcome bench or statement mirror in your entryway. Invest in custom candles that have a scent that brings you back to a favorite memory or vacation, or place luxurious towels in your bathroom to create a spa-like experience. Identify the potential in those undefined spaces to craft little “moments” for relaxation, such as a reading nook, a charming coffee corner, or a serene meditation space. Boutique hotels are filled with little “moments”, and one of my favorite aspects of space planning is discovering those hidden areas of opportunity. After all, our homes are meant to be beautiful spaces where we spend our time. If we don’t take advantage of the possibilities within the home, then it’s just four walls – a whole lot of missed opportunity.
To create a boutique-hotel feel at home, the proper use of color, texture, lighting, high-end materials, meaningful touches, and personalized experiences will achieve that cozy, welcoming feeling every time you step through the front door.
